Victorian Wines Show 2008 Chairman of Judges Report – Amateur Section A very successful show this year: A gold medal was awarded to a spectacular 2005 Chardonnay/Traminer blend which had retained all of its youth, aroma, flavour and structure. On a whole Matthew di Sciascio and I were impressed with the quality of winemaking that abounds the amateur producers. The perennial difficulty of access to quality grapes was apparent. However, if quality fruit can be sourced, these talented winemakers will make some outstanding wines. Fruit wines are always a joy to judge. The few entries that we had, including nectarine and raspberry were very well made. School Section: In our fledgling (only the second year) school’s section we received nine entries. Of these seven medals were awarded; one gold, two silver and four bronze. An excellent effort for all involved. We are heartened to know that students are being taught correct methods of making quality wines and understanding the science in the process. This does well for the future of the industry. To all exhibitors a humble and sincere thank you, and very well done. Darren Jewell
